Copa Combate 2 results: Andres Quintana wins tournament with spinning elbow KO, earns $100K grand prize

Combate Americas

Andres Quintana left Copa Combate 2 with three professional MMA wins on his record, a giant trophy cup and $100,000.

Representing the U.S., Quintana won Combate Americas’ second annual one-night, eight-man featherweight tournament, which took place at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif., on Friday night.

Quintana was victorious in the final by stopping Alejandro Flores with a wild spinning elbow knockout in the first round. Quintana was walking down Flores and landing big shots. Although Flores was on the backpedal, the Mexican fighter was landing some shots of his own, including a body kick that stunned Quintana for a couple of seconds about halfway through the first. Flores rushed Quintana in hopes of landing the finishing blows and that’s when Quintana responded with a wild spinning elbow that ended the fight.

Quintana reached the final by outpointing Marlon Gonzales in a dominant performance as part of the quarterfinals and stopping UFC fighter Guido Cannetti’s brother, Bruno Cannetti, in the first.

The win over Cannetti was controversial, as the Argentine claimed it was an early stoppage. Cannetti dropped Quintana early in the first and immediately hit him with hard ground-and-pound. The 27-year-old Quintana was able to recover and get back to his feet where he dropped Cannetti with a left hook from the clinch. Quintana followed up with ground-and-pound as the Team Alpha Male fighter looked for a takedown.

The crowed booed the official’s call and Combate Americas’ English-language commentators and current UFC fighters Julianna Peña and Gilbert Melendez were also critical of the decision.

Regardless, Quintana is now 18-2 in his professional MMA career and remains undefeated in the Combate Americas cage with a record of 8-0. “The Bullet” takes home the tournament’s $100,00 grand prize.
