Less than 10 days of preparation. 14 minutes of almost zero offense. Kay Hansen was dead in the water.
Until she wasn’t.
The 19-year-old strawweight, who was stepping in on short-notice for an injured Kanako Murata, was being absolutely dominated by the wrestling of Sharon Jacobson in their main card bout Saturday at Invicta FC 33 in Kansas City, Mo. A strong grappler, Jacobson was able to toss Hansen around at will for the majority of their three-round contest and once on top, she was rarely threatened as she chipped away with ground-and-pound.
Jacobson was cruising to a unanimous decision when she decided to go for an overhead throw in the closing moments of round three. Instead of putting an exclamation point on her performance, Jacobson ended up with Hansen on top of her and her arm in Hansen’s clutches.
Seconds later, Jacobson was tapping out with 17 seconds left in the fight.
It was the third submission loss of Jacobson’s career and she fell to 5-4 as a pro, while Hansen’s record jumps to 4-2 after her miraculous comeback.
Watch the unbelievable finish above.
