Fans may have to wait until 2019 before catching another glimpse of Gilbert Melendez in action.
The former Strikeforce lightweight champion and two-time UFC title challenger has been forced to withdraw from his Nov. 30 featherweight bout opposite Arnold Allen at The Ultimate Fighter 28 Finale in Las Vegas due to an injury, officials announced Monday. Taking Melendez’s place on short notice will be former World Series of Fighting champion Rick Glenn.
This was to be Melendez’s first fight since UFC 215 in September of last year, where he lost a unanimous decision to Jeremy Stephens. “El Nino” has lost four straight and five of his last six since coming over from the Strikeforce promotion.
Glenn (21-5-1) has won three of his last four fights, most recently earning a split nod over Dennis Bermudez to boost his UFC record to 3-2. One of those Octagon losses came in Glenn’s UFC debut, which involved him competing at 155 pounds and accepting a bout on just 12 days’ notice.
