Round 1: Here we go, the main event. Even as the fighters stand in the cage it still seems a little surreal that this particular heavyweight title fight came together in the odd way it did (out of necessity). The referee for this one is Herbert Dean. Very courteous touching of gloves at instructions, no bad blood here. Lewis stationary in the middle, and tries a body kick right off. Cormier circles. Another kick, this time to the legs from Lewis. Cormier backing Lewis down on fence, and now he single legs and dumps Lewis right there on fence. Crowd lets up a half-groan, half-roar. Immediately Cormier scooting up, and trying to work his right hand into a power bomb. Worst case scenario for Lewis early. Short elbows from Cormier being dropped. Crowd lets up a thunderous boo. Now Cormier is able to posture up and he cuts down with a couple of shots. Lewis gets to his knees, and Cormier pounces on his back. Lewis carries him to his feet though, and an ovation. Cormier still in control here, and he trips him back down. Cormier trying to pry out of Lewis’s grip, and now does to land a couple of left hands, nothing flush yet. Short elbows and forearms from Cormier in close, and Lewis’s head is glistening with sweat. Now Lewis rolls oer and gives up his back momentarily, and as he does Cormier begins wailing on him. Now he physically drags Lewis straight back on his knees and over, and lands again. Lewis on one knee on fence, and wearing Cormier like a burden. The clacks come none too soon for Lewis, who was thumped that round. MMA Fighting scores R1 for Cormier, 10-8.
Round 2: Cormier looks fresh still as he emerges from his corner. Lewis not breathing hard either. They are cautiously playing the middle, and Lewis throws a big right and that startled Cormier. He now tries a high kick, and the crowd loves it. Big combo to right hand from Lewis, but it didn’t land flush. Now Cormier dives in for a single, gets it, and hoists Lewis’s hulk into the air and dumps him down. Crowd wowed by that, but also dismayed. Cormier laying his weight on Lewis, who tried to get up but was dropped back down. Now Cormier has his back and is sinking a rear-naked choke. He has it deep, and...there it is. The tap! Cormier retains his heavyweight title! Pretty dominant stuff.
