Round 1: The under the radar middleweight fight on the card. Referee for this one is Yves Lavigne. Touch of the gloves. Marshman rolls around the center, where Roberson is holding his ground. A wild exchange with menace right off, but neither man connected. Still, the moan of the crowd. Now Roberson goes low and pushes Marshman to the fence, where the Welsh fighter lands a couple of in-close punches. They are back to center, and Marshman eats a big right hand that was very audible. Crowd heard it. Roberson takes another shot and gets on his bike, rolls out of there. Marshman threatens on a surge forward, but doesn’t pull the trigger — he’s measuring. Now he unloads, but Roberson looked springloaded, as he moved his head and shoulders to get out of the way. Wow! Roberson rolls forward wining bombs and he lands a couple, but he got buckled slightly with a counter there too. Great heat from both fighters. Now they are back to center, and a nice front kick from Roberson. Big overhand right from Marshman, mostly blocked — he was looking for something to end there. He pushes forward again with a sally of punches, and Roberson this time peels off. Round going to end there. MMA Fighting scores R1 for Roberson, 10-9
Round 2: Roberson to the middle, and this time Marshman rolling around, and he lands a high kick. Now Marshman with about four or five punches in a quick heater, and a couple of those got through. Left counter from Roberson lands flush, and that momentarily stunned Marshman, who went backwards on wobbly legs. He seems better now. Another jab on the money for Roberson, a right. Marshman is dogged in moving forward, and he eats another straight shot as he does — a joust to the brow. Great movement from Roberson. He’s also switching up here and there and directly those jabs at Marshman’s chest. Wild exchange, and Roberson with the big punishing shot at the end. Now he takes Marshman down, and he’s right to side control. The crowd let’s up a torrent of Ric Flair “woo’s.” Marshman clinging to Roberson’s neck, not letting him posture up or get any leverage. Not exactly a stalemate, but Roberson having trouble doing anything from the dominant position. MMA Fighting scores R2 for Roberson, 10-9 (20-18 overall)
Round 3: See if Marshman can respond here. His corner was giving him a passionate earful between rounds, trying to rally him. Roberson still looks energetic. They touch gloves one last time. And it’s Roberson to center. Big left hand lands from Roberson, which made Marshman lean back like a strong gust of wind hit him. Crowd here in New York liked that. Roberson very measured and precise on his shots. Marshman just looking for an opening in which to get something going. He circles, and dekes with a right. There is some blood on Marshman’s face, about the nose area, as he eats another right hand. They are selective, those shots, but they are finding their marks on Marshman’s face. High kick is blocked by Marshman. Another great right counter there from Roberson, who now takes the Welshman down. Once again he’s right to side control, though this time it’s along the fence. Marshman trying to cage walk a bit, but Roberson is smothering him — not giving him the benefit of freedom. Lavigne has one of their mouthpieces and drops it over the fence for a rinse. Now he’s got it back, as he watches Roberson move to mount. Bad spot here for Marshman, as he is holding on for dear life. Roberson has been unable to do much with these positions, and there’s only half a minute left. Looks like Roberson is going to ride this one out in that position, and the fight should be his. MMA Fighting scores R3 for Roberson, 10-9 (30-27 overall)
UFC 230 official results: Karl Roberson def. Jack Marshman via unanimous decision (30-26, 30-26, 30-27)
