B.J. Penn’s brother Reagan Penn accused of assault in Brazil

Reagan Penn got in some hot water with Brazilian police this week.

Penn, who has a record of 1-1 in mixed martial arts, was in Rio de Janeiro to help his older brother B.J. Penn prepare for his upcoming UFC 232 fight with Ryan Hall on Dec. 29. However, on Wednesday night, he allegedly assaulted three people in Botafogo, multiple sources told MMA Fighting on Thursday.

Rio de Janeiro’s military police tweeted late Wednesday night that an “American, identified as an MMA fighter, had to be restrained after assaulting a few people” in a building at the Botafogo beach. “The foreigner was very aggressive,” the tweet read, and firemen were called to take the identified man to a local hospital.

According to sources, Reagan flew back to Hawaii on Thursday morning. B.J. remains in Rio de Janeiro to finish his camp at Nova Uniao.

Much like his older brother and UFC Hall of Famer, Reagan is a black belt in jiu-jitsu, but only competed twice in MMA, both under the ProElite banner. Reagan Penn scored his first and only win in the sport in 2011, submitting Paul Gardiner in the first round. Three months later, he lost a decision to Evan Cutts and never competed again.

In January 2017, just days before B.J. Penn’s fight with Yair Rodriguez at UFC Phoenix, TMZ reported that Reagan had been arrested at the Los Angeles airport. According to the TMZ report at the time, Penn ”got into it with flight crew over alcohol.”
