Cynthia Calvillo had a terrible day Friday. But her Saturday went quite a bit better.

The Team Alpha Male strawweight missed weight for her UFC Argentina bout with Poliana Botelho by two pounds after a scary scene in which it looked like she was about to pass out.

But Calvillo rebounded in fine fashion in the fight itself, as she took the 118-pound catchweight main card opener on Saturday night via submission. The time of the stoppage due to a rear-naked choke was 4:48 of the opening round.

“It feels amazing just to be back, it feels like I’m home again,” Calvillo said. “I’m really glad to be back.”

Botelho, who entered the fight with knockouts in six of her seven career wins, figured to have the edge in the standup, but Calvillo was ready, as she caught a kick and turned it into a takedown.

Nova Uniao’s Botelho got back to her feet, but she had no answer the second time, as Calvillo, who had a noticeable size advantage scored another takedown and worked into side control. Calvillo softened Botelho up with left hands to the head before sinking in the no-hooks rear-naked choke and earning the tap.

“I’ve said it before, the mat is my ocean and I’m a shark,” Calvillo said. “I’m confident on the ground and I’ve got it.”

The win put Calvillo (7-1) in a four-way tie for most finish victories in UFC strawweight history with three, one short of Rose Namajunas’ record. She’s also 4-1 in the UFC. Botelho (7-2) had a five-fight winning streak snapped as she fell for the first time in three UFC fights.
