Dennis Bermudez appeared to execute a solid game plan on Saturday night at UFC on FOX 27.
The Long Island featherweight disregarded a size and reach disadvantage in his featherweight co-feature bout against Andre Fili in Charlotte. He out-struck his foe 130-74 over the course of the matchup.
But Fili had his moments in the co-feature bout and scored timely takedowns, and that was enough to sway two judges. Fili earned split decision Saturday night with scores of 28-29, 30-27, and 29-28.
“It was the biggest win of my career, but it wasn’t the prettiest,” Fili said.
Bermudez set the tone in the opening round, as he fearlessly waded in to Fili’s range and connected with crisp jabs. Fili, however, scored a late takedown.
Bermudez started really mixing in low kicks in the second round and began to wear Fili down. Fili again scored a late takedown.
Things slowed a bit in the third, which was more of a tossup round, particularly after Bermudez landed an accidental low blow.
Fili improved to 23-5 with his seventh career decision win. He’s won two straight and three of four. Bermudez’s third straight loss dropped him to 16-8.
