It had all the makings of a feel-good moment: Hometown guy Jordan Rinaldi, fighting in front of his fans in Charlotte, scoring a victory on national television.
The wrinkle in this plan is that Rinaldi’s opponent is an up-and-coming beast of a lightweight in Gregor Gillespie.
And Gillespie didn’t take long to remind us that he’s one to watch at 155 pounds, as he rolled over Rinaldi. The time of the TKO stoppage at UFC on FOX 27 on Saturday was 4:46 of the opening round.
With the victory, the Long Islander improved to 11-0, 4-0 in the UFC, with the last three victories via finish.
Gillespie came out headhunting at the jump. But after scoring a takedown, Gillespie soon took over, transitioning smoothly and improving his position. The beginning of the end came when he got Rinaldi’s back, started raining down punches, and kept it up until the bout was waved off.
Gillespie didn’t want to call out a specific foe after the win.
“I don’t know, if you put someone in front of me I’ll beat them. I’m here to put on good fights for the fans.”
Rinaldi dropped to 13-6 and has lost two of his past three.
