Top strawweight contenders Karolina Kowalkiewicz and Felice Herrig will throw down at UFC 223 on April 7 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Officials confirmed the strawweight bout to MMA Fighting on Monday, following an initial report from MMANytt.
Herrig also announced the rumored bout on her Instagram:
It’s official. I will face Karolina Kowalkiewicz April 7 in Brooklyn NY on #ufc223 I’m super pumped because I’ve been asking to face a top 10 fighter for a while but keep getting the toughest fighters just out of the top 10. This is the match up I asked for. ask and you shall receive. I’m excited to show people what I can do against a step up in competition . I’m well aware that I will be the underdog in this fight which is ok with me. I’ve been the underdog most of my career and I thrive off of it. Bring it on. I’ll be ready
A nine-year MMA veteran, Herrig is on a hot streak having won four straight bouts and five of her last six. She’s taken her last three fights on the scorecards, with her most recent outing at UFC 218 ending in a split decision victory over Cortney Casey. Her professional record stands at 14-6.
Kowalkiewicz rebounded from the first losing skid of her career in October, defeating Jodie Esquibel by unanimous decision at UFC Gdansk to improve to 11-2. Her lone losses have come against Claudia Gadelha and Joanna Jedrzejczyk, the latter occurring in a strawweight championship bout at UFC 205 at Madison Square Garden in New York.
UFC 223 will be headlined by a title bout between interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov. Strawweight champion Rose Namajunas will also be in action as she looks to defend her title against Jedrzejczyk in a rematch from UFC 217.
