BOSTON -- Home-field advantage helped get Rob Font back into the win column.
The bantamweight from N. Reading, Mass. looked to shake off a loss and accepted a fight with Thomas Almeida on Saturday night at UFC 220. After taking a round to figure things out, he brought the house down at TD Garden.
A head kick and a handful of uppercuts finished the job as he got a TKO at 2:24 of the second round.
“That’s how we do it at the TD Garden,” said Font (15-3), the winner of three out of his past four fights. “It was good to have the fans behind me tonight.”
The opening round was a back-and-forth affair, as both competitors felt each other out and tried to establish their range.
But Font landed a fight-changing straight right to the temple early in the second round. Almeida recovered, but was clearly on rubber legs from there on out. Font’s right shin landed flush on Almeida’s face, leading to the finishing sequence and an Almeida faceplant on the mat.
Almeida (21-3) has now lost two straight and three of four.
