Ronda Rousey’s transition to pro wrestling seems imminent.
The former UFC women’s bantamweight champion was featured in a storyline segment on WWE.com on Monday with friends and MMA training partners Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir. A future match was alluded to.
In the scripted segment, Rousey, Duke and Shafir were being interviewed after their teammate Shayna Baszler’s WWE Mae Young Classic tournament second-round victory. The trio was confronted by three of WWE’s top female stars, Charlotte Flair, Bayley and Becky Lynch.
“You name the time, you name the place,” Rousey said. … “Oh, not today? We’re waiting to hear from you.”
Rousey, Baszler, Duke and Shafir were dubbed years ago as women’s MMA’s Four Horsewomen, an homage to the famous Four Horseman pro-wrestling stable. In women’s wrestling, Flair, Lynch, Bayley and Sasha Banks have become known as the Four Horsewomen.
Baszler, a women’s MMA pioneer, longtime pro-wrestling aficionado and catch wrestling expert, has already crossed over into pro wrestling. She has been booked into the finals of the 32-woman Mae Young Classic tournament next week, a live show in Las Vegas. WWE is reportedly very high on her and seems likely to sign her.
There has been speculation that the two Four Horsewomen factions could have a 4-on-4 wrestling match at WWE’s Survivor Series pay-per-view event Nov. 19 in Houston. Rousey and Duke are already reportedly training pro wrestling in the LA area.
Rousey, too, is a longtime pro-wrestling fan. She attended the wildly popular indie pro-wrestling event Pro Wrestling Guerrilla on Saturday night in Los Angeles as a fan and was very into the action. Baszler and Duke were also in attendance, seated front row.
Shafir is engaged to WWE NXT star Roderick Strong and the two just had a child together. And Lynch, a top WWE female wrestler, is dating UFC fighter Luke Sanders.
Rousey, the best known women’s MMA fighter ever, appeared at WWE’s WrestleMania in 2015 in a segment with The Rock, Triple H and Stephanie McMahon.
