Mike Rodriguez took control of his own destiny on Tuesday.
The 28-year-old light heavyweight left a major impression on Dana White — and his opponent’s face — in the main event of the latest episode of the UFC president’s Contender Series. In a battle between two agile and athletic 205ers, it was Rodriguez who made Jamelle Jones pay for telegraphing a takedown by crushing him with a jumping knee that instantly robbed Jones of his senses.
A few ground-and-pound punches followed, but this one was over the second that Rodriguez landed his perfectly timed counter strike.
All of Rodriguez’s nine career wins have come by way of knockout or submission, and his latest finish was enough to earn him a spot on the UFC roster.
