UFC 213: Romero vs. Whittaker took place July 8 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum (21-7-1) took on top contender Alistair Overeem (43–15, 1 NC) in the night's co-main event, which aired live on pay-per-view. Catch the video highlights above.

Round 1: Herb Dean is the referee for the heavyweight rubber match that may well determine the next challenger for Stipe Miocic’s belt. Werdum runs right across the cage and goes for a jumping kick but Overeem is well aware and the kick is nowhere close to landing. Overeem has his hands by his hips and is switching stances and feinting a bunch. Overeem finally explodes for a high kick and Werdum responds by pressuring forward. They clinch with OVereem driving Werdum to the cage and separating quickly. Werdum charges forward with a combination but Overeem eludes. Almost no offense from Overeem so far and Werdum is not much better but he lands a right hook off a combination. Werdum has a leg swept out from under him but Overeem has no interest in going to the ground. Overeem lands a good right hand and Werdum presses forward but Overeem is not there to be hit. Werdum lands his best strike of the evening so far, a strong body kick and now Overeem is coming forward. Still lots of feints from both men without much offense. Jon Anik informs us that 8 total strikes have been landed through four and a half minutes as Overeem stuffs a weak takedown attempt from Werdum. Werdum throws a rolling kick that is well off and after the bell sounds there is a slight dust up as Werdum throws a late kick but without much on it. MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Overeem.
Round 2: Werdum again leads with a flying side kick that misses by a mile. Brian Stann informs us that total strike count from round one was 7-4 in favor of Werdum. Overeem lands a good shot and Werdum has a rear waist-lock and pulls guard. Overeem has no intention of staying there with Werdum though and quickly stands. Overeem lands a good left why Werdum lands a solid body kick. Overeem stuns Werdum with a sharp uppercut and Werdum once again pulls guard. Overeem refuses to play that game though and they’re back on their feet. Werdum just can’t land any offense and Overeem lands a huge left hand as Werdum charges in, stopping Werdum in his tracks. Werdum is now second guessing himself but charges in with a combination of glancing blows. Werdum lands a strong jab that gets Overeem’s attention. Overeem explodes into a left hand that cracks Werdum but the former heavyweight champion is no worse for wear and now he presses the issues as the round winds down but nothing big lands. Round 3: Overeem clearly won the second round but round one is up for grabs so it’s possible that Werdum needs a stoppage in this round. Overeem swings a wild hook that catches air. Werdum lands a good counter right hook. Overeem is now pressuring much more but he still can’t find a home for anything substantive. Werdum finally lands a good knee in the clinch and Overeem is on the defensive much more but his head movement is excellent. Werdum lands a 1-2 and then a huge knee that has Overeem in trouble! Werdum tries to jump a guillotine but he misses. OVereem gets back to his feet but he’s still on rubber legs and Werdum is putting shots on him. Now Werdum shoots a double leg and gets Overeem on his back against the fence. Overeem is hanging on and keeping Werdum’s from posturing up. Werdum tries to pass but but he can’t and now he’s working hammerfists from inside the guard. Werdum is landing some decent shots but Overeem is getting a chance to recover. Now Overeem is trying to get back to his feet and Werdum is more concerned with control than damage as the clock is winding down. Werdum advances to half-guard but Overeem locks him down until the final horn. MMA Fighting scores the bout 10-8 for Werdum, 28-28 draw in total.
