Gian Villante has heavy hands, power which would probably stop a bull dead in its tracks.
Patrick Cummins can take a lot of punishment and keep on ticking.
That was a recipe for exactly the sort of light heavyweight showdown that played out Saturday night at UFC on FOX 25. Both had their moments in a lumbering, hard-hitting 15 minutes at Nassau Coliseum, but Cummins had just a bit more in the tank. He got the better end of two out of three 29-28 scores for the split decision.
The Long Island-based Villante wasted little time getting things under way, as he rocked and wobbled Cummins with big right hands. An accidental headbutt cut Cummins open and the timeout afterward gave him time to recover.
The Dana Point, Calif., resident then got back into the fight and began using his wrestling to dictate the pace. When he wasn’t outgrappling Villante, he was holding his own in the striking department, as he outlanded Villante 50-17 in the second round.
The third round was a microcosm of the fight itself, as Villante again rocked Cummins, only to let Cummins get back into things and finish the round strong.
Cummins (10-4) won his second straight fight and his 6-3 in his past nine fights. Villante (15-9) has dropped three of his past four.
