It seemed curious how Alex Oliveira was laughing and smiling throughout his UFC on FOX 25 bout with Ryan LaFlare. Especially after Oliveira handily lost their first round of their welterweight matchup.
Turns out he seemed to know something the rest of us didn’t. Oliveira baited LaFlare into charging right into a perfectly timed uppercut, ending Saturday night’s bout at Nassau Coliseum via knockout at the 1:50 mark of the second round.
LaFlare, a Long Island native competing on his home turf, had the crowd behind him as he cruised through the first round. LaFlare took him down and spent half the round in side control, giving Oliveira little to work with.
In the second, though, Oliveira picked up the pace, landing solid punches and sprawling LaFlare’s first takedown attempt. LaFlare’s second attempt turned out to be the killer.
“I know he was going to put me down in the first round,” Oliveira said. “I needed to relax, I knew I was going to get him in the second round.”
Oliveira improved to 18-3-1 (2 NC) with his 15th career finish. Minus a no-contest, he’s won three straight and six of seven. LaFlare (13-2) is 2-2 in his past four.
