Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series 2 results: Sean O’Malley earns UFC contract with first-round KO

On Tuesday evening, another 10 up-and-coming fighters looking to make their way into the UFC competed in the second edition of Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series in Las Vegas. Last week, two fighters were awarded UFC contracts but this week only one fighter is walking away as a new addition to the UFC: Sean O’Malley.

O’Malley, an undefeated 22-year-old prospect, earned his contract in one of the most fun four minutes of fighting you’ll see. He and Alfred Khashakyan threw down with little regard for defense until O’Malley hurt Khashakyan badly with a right hand. He followed up with a head kick that glanced off and shortly afterwards, a thunderbolt of a right hand planted Khashakyan on the mat, forcing referee Mark Smith to jump in and make the save. O’Malley trains out of the MMA Lab and will make the jump to the UFC with a sterling 8-0 record.

Despite the winner not being awarded a UFC contract, the main event was host to some drama as TUF 19 alum Dan Spohn scored a comeback victory over short notice replacement Angel DeAnda. DeAnda had Spohn hurt and in trouble but landed multiple illegal strikes to the back of Spohn’s head. Referee Big John McCarthy stopped the bout, had medical look at Spohn, and then deducted a point from DeAnda for the strikes. That point deduction didn’t matter though as moments after restarting the bout, Spohn hurt DeAnda and then finished him with an arm-triangle choke on the ground.

Elsewhere on the card, Thanh Le knocked out Lazar Stojadinovic with a head kick in the second round, and Sidney Outlaw and Casey Kenney both picked up unanimous decision wins over Michael Cora and Cee Jay Hamilton respectively.
