Bellator NYC: Sonnen vs. Silva took place June 25 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York. Veteran light heavyweight Chael Sonnen (30-15-1) and Pride FC legend Wanderlei Silva (35-13-1, 1 NC) faced off in a long-awaited grudge match in the night's main event, which aired live on pay-per-view. Round 1: Main event time. See if the weirdness continues. The referee is Big John McCarthy. Anthems were played for America and Brazil. It’s 12:32am. Here we go. Leg kick from Chael, and he immediately takes Wanderlei down. Shades of old Sonnen. He goes into some serious ground and pound on fence, and Wandy is fending best he can. Hammerfists now. Sonnen postures up and lands a nice load of rights. This is what Wandy couldn’t afford to do. It’s like Sonnen is swimming, the way he keeps moving his arms. Silva isn’t exactly keeping him tight. Sonnen’s G&P continues. Now Wandy able to get back up, and the crowd lets out a roar. See how long he can stay here. They are clinched, and now they break. Silva wallops Sonnen with a right hand, and he goes down! Now Wandy jumps on him, and is trying to finish. That gives Sonnen time to recover, now he gets up and takes Silva down. Whoa. It’s Sonnen on top now, and right back to the ground and pound. Elbows from Sonnen as the 10-second clacks ring out. He ends round on top. Crazy opening round there. Round 2: Silva lands another big punch, and Sonnen again wobbles, and as Sonnen takes Silva down Silva grabs his neck. He is squeezing for his life, turning red. Sonnen doesn’t appear in danger. On it goes. Silva might be gassing himself out here, just hold the choke, which isn’t in clean. He’s holding on for dear life though as McCarthy looks on. Now they are asked to stand, and immediately Sonnen shoots for a take down and gets it with relative ease. Bad spot for Silva, given the expense of energy he spent on that choke. Sonnen operating from his guard, and landing shots. Right hands from Sonnen, as he postures out for space. It’s a landslide when it gets to this position. Silva just can’t up. Chael does for a quick second, but only to put some mustard on a right hand as he dives back into Silva’s guard. That is how the round will end. With Sonnen on top. Round 3: Sonnen waits for Silva to throw a big piece of leather, and immediately shoots for a double-leg, and down they go. This time Sonnen fairly easily advances to mount, but Silva recovers back to half guard. Sonnen landing elbows. Sonnen just suffocating Silva here, taking it to him. Silva has been rendered helpless to do much about it, and then again, Sonnen doesn’t seem to have any finishers other than the hammerists and rights. So far Silva taking his beat to the ticking of the clock. Now into mount. And now into side control. Silva unable to help it. Crowd doesn’t know what to think, but this is Chael’s fight. He’s going to get this decision. He’s back into mount, and wailing away with punches to Silva’s sides. This is how the feud ends; the way most thought it would.
