Fedor Emelianenko and Matt Mitrione fired off big right hands at the same time Saturday night at Madison Square Garden.
They both landed flush. They both hit the mat. For a split second, it appeared we might have a double knockout for the ages.
But Mitrione regained his bearings in a hurry and soon put things to an end.
The heavyweight brawler pounced on the legendary former PRIDE champion from Russia and finished him with a bunch of short rights and then a big one, ending their Bellator NYC fight via knockout at just 1:14.
“I’ll remember thinking ‘Oh shit, I’ve got to jump on him,” said Mitrione (12-5).
Mitrione has now won three straight fights since moving over to Bellator from the UFC. The 40-year-old Emelianenko (37-4, 1 NC) had a five-fight win streak snapped.
