James Gallagher has been called cocky.

But after the performance the 20-year-old Irishman put on Saturday night in his biggest career spotlight at Madison Square Garden, perhaps he should simply be called confident.

Gallagher made short work of Chinzo Machida in New York, winning their featherweight fight at Bellator 180 via submission at 2:22 at of the opening round. The win came by way of rear-naked choke.

“I’m always here for the first-round finish,” Gallagher said. “When it’s there, I come and do it.”

Machida sprawled Gallagher’s first takedown attempt. But Gallagher hit paydirt with the second one, and wasted little time transitioning to Machida’s back. He locked in a body triangle, softened up Machida with punches to the head, and finally went for the kill, sinking in the choke and getting the tap.

The Strabane, Ireland native improved to 6-0 with his sixth career submission. Machida, the older brother of former UFC light heavyweight champ Lyoto Machida, had a four-fight win streak snapped and dropped to 5-3.
