It might not have been the high-profile matchup many thought Gunnar Nelson would get, but it is a headlining spot.
Nelson will take on Santiago Ponzinibbio in the main event of UFC Fight Night 113 on July 16 in Glasgow, Scotland, the UFC announced Friday morning on its UFC Europe Twitter account. The bout was first reported by Pétur Marinó Jónsson of Iceland’s MMA Fréttir.
Nelson (16-2-1) has won two straight, most recently a second-round submission victory over Alan Jouban in March. The Icelandic star and Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt has only lost to Demian Maia since 2014. Nelson, 28, boasts a 7-2 record in the UFC and has etched his name among the top welterweights in the world.
Ponzinibbio (24-3) has quietly put together one heck of a run, winning four straight, including two by TKO. The Argentinian striker has only lost to Lorenz Larkin since 2013, emerging victorious six of his last seven fights. Ponzinibbio, 30, trains out of Rio de Janeiro and is an alum of The Ultimate Fighter Brazil.
