Ratings report: Mixed bag for UFC Fight Night 108, while Bellator 178 has strong showing

MMA: UFC Fight Night-Ellenberger vs Perry Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

Due to a baseball game running long, the ratings for Saturday's UFC Fight Night from Nashville had both good and bad news.

From a record standpoint, the Mike Perry vs. Jake Ellenberger fight on FS 2 did 430,000 viewers, making it the second most-watched show in the history of the station. Perry vs. Ellenberger was originally set to open the FS 1 event. The most-watched event ever on FS 2 were UFC 200 prelims that also were supposed to be on FS 1 and were moved to FS 2 due to a long running game and holds the station record of 582,000 viewers.

The scheduled two hours of prelims on FS 2, anchored by Thales Leites vs. Sam Alvey, averaged 320,000 viewers, the eighth most-watched program in the history of the station.

But the late start on FS 1, beginning 32 minutes past the scheduled start, as well as sports competition from the NBA and NHL playoffs as well as boxing, saw the main card on FS 1 do 745,000 viewers, well below usual. The show peaked at 831,000 viewers for the Cub Swanson vs. Artem Lobov main event.

UFC Fight Nights usually do around 900,000 viewers, but the number varies wildly based on the main event and competition. The Golden State Warriors vs. Portland Trailblazers NBA playoff game on ESPN did 4,384,000 viewers, while an NHL playoff game on NBC did 2,055,000 viewers.

Friday night's Bellator card on Spike, where Patricio "Pitbull" Freire beat Daniel Straus to win the featherweight title, did 674,000 viewers, a strong showing going against both NBA and NHL playoffs. Bellator beat the NHL game on NBC Sports head-to-head, which did 642,000 viewers.

It was the highest rated of Bellator's three April events, as the only one that aired both live and in prime time. It was the best number since the King Mo vs. Rampage Jackson show did 909,000 viewers on March 31.
