UFC on FOX 24 results: Alexander Volkov outslugs Roy Nelson

As he enters his 40s, Roy Nelson’s legendary chin remains as granite-like as ever. He demonstrated as much in his Saturday night UFC on FOX 24 matchup with Alexander Volkov, as Nelson took everything the former Bellator heavyweight champ could throw at him and stayed standing.

Unfortunately, though, age seems to be catching up to Nelson in every other aspect of his game. Nelson slowed after a strong first round, which enabled Volkov to take 30-27 across-the-board scores in a unanimous decision in Kansas City.

Nelson took control of the opening round from the outset, landing uppercuts, scoring a takedown, and working Volkov over in the top position. Volkov did manage to get to his feet, and the duo had an electrifying exchange over the final 20 seconds, with Volkov opening up with a wild flurry and Nelson connecting on wild defensive uppercuts. The judges apparently decided that final flurry negated the 4:40 or so which Nelson controlled.

But in the second, Nelson was noticeably tired. Volkov established an efficient jab and Nelson, after being unable to score another takedown, appeared to run out of ideas. In the third, Volkov was largely content to sit back, keep his distance with front kicks, and easily evade Nelson’s telegraphed attempts at home-run swings.

The 28-year-old Volkov improved to 28-6, and 2-0 in the UFC.

“No rest,” Volkov said through an interpreter. “I’m here, guys. I’m here for the belt.”

Nelson, in his 19th UFC fight, dropped to 22-14 after his second loss in his past three.
