Morning Report: Michael Bisping on UFC 209: ‘If they’re the best welterweights in the world, then I should f**k up GSP’

New, comments
Michael Bisping vs Georges St-Pierre

On Saturday, UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley narrowly defended his title, edging out a majority decision over Stephen Thompson in a fight that has widely been lambasted as exceedingly bad. And while both participants in the fight have defended their cautious approaches, others have not been so genial.

UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping spoke with TMZ Sports after the fight where he gave his opinion on the bout. Bisping is set to defend his belt against former long-time UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre later this year and he said that if the title fight at UFC 209 was between the best the 170 pound division has to offer, he likes his chances to retain his own belt.

“Well, let’s be honest, it was tactical but it wasn’t the most satisfying fight,” said Bisping. “If they’re the best welterweights in the world, then I should fuck up GSP. That’s a fact. If they’re the best welterweights in the world then GSP is going to a funeral pretty quick.”

Woodley and Thompson are in fact the two top-ranked fighters in the division, though Demian Maia, who has put together an impressive win streak in the division, may want to argue the point with Thompson. Woodley though is the current champion and even considers himself the best welterweight of all time, even better than Bisping’s future opponent. A belief Bisping doesn’t seem to share.

“Best welterweight of all time? I like Tyron but all I saw there was 20 minutes of backing up. You’ve got to go forwards to win a fight. It was a tactical fight, Tyron won, congratulations to him. Well done.”

As for Bisping, this was the capper to a rather eventful weekend for the champion. On Thursday, he won Upset of the Year at the World MMA Award, and then on Friday, he attended a press conference with Georges St-Pierre for their upcoming fight. However, he was several minutes late to the press conference (so much so that they began without him) and when he did arrive his voice was raspy and St-Pierre accused him of still being drunk from the night before as the two exchanged barbs on stage. Bisping also responded to those accusations.

“If the fight was happening sometime soon, if I was in fight camp, then I wouldn’t touch a drop of alcohol. But the fact is, the guy needs so long to get ready for the fight, we’re not gonna fight until the summer. So I’m in Vegas, I went to an award show, I won an award; am I not allowed to have a couple of cocktails the night before? GSP grow up. Stop acting like a 12-year-old. I’m in Vegas, if I want to party, I’ll party.”

Michael Bisping will defend his UFC middleweight championship against Georges St-Pierre later this year at an event, date, and venue to be determined.

Results. UFC 209 happened and here are the results.

More defense. Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson both defend their lackluster fight.

Pipe down. Dana White says only Conor McGregor should be talking about “money fights.”

Ouch. Khabib Nurmagomedov would have made $500,000 had he fought Tony Ferguson.

Tough. Alistair Overeem had food poisoning before his fight with Mark Hunt.

Beef. Holly Holm says Germaine de Randamie’s title win was “not a real victory.”

209 presser.

Free fight.

Lion Fight highlights.

Bisping gonna be a movie star again.

A lot of talking about this video without ever actually releasing...

Michael Johnson trying to get a rematch with a dude he beat.

Yeah. I guess so.

Nick not feeling that main event this weekend.

Cancel Maia-Masvidal. Give Maia his title shot and let Masvidal fight Thompson.

This is a thing that happens all the time.

Probably the closest we ever get to MayGregor but this guy does one hell of a Conor impression.

This was the best MMA thing that happened over the weekend.

ACB is picking up some talent.

Two of England’s best strikers.

2010: Dominick Cruz won his first Zuffa title, winning the WEC bantamweight title from Brian Bowles who broke his hand and was unable to continue.

Look, I think Tyron Woodley beats Conor McGregor. But if I’m Conor, I’m at least looking at that fight as plausibly winnable after this weekend. Woodley just goes through huge stretches of fights where he refuses to use any offense and that is how he was really close to losing to a guy (twice!) that he almost knocked out both times.

And if I’m Conor, I’m definitely not gonna fight Tony now. Conor should only accept fights with Woodley, GSP, or Mayweather.

That’s it for today y’all. Have a good one and I’ll see y’all tomorrow.
