Unlike many top contenders, Ronaldo Souza is not going to sit around and wait for a title shot.
The Brazilian picked up a first-round submission victory over Tim Boetsch on the main card of Saturday’s UFC 208 in Brooklyn. With this win, “Jacare” is now 7-1 since joining the UFC back in 2013 with his only defeat being a close split-decision loss to No. 1 contender Yoel Romero.
Yet, despite being in a good position in the middleweight division, “Jacare” would rather keep taking fights and risk his position in the division than wait for his turn to challenge for gold.
“I want to fight the champion, but if that’s going to take a while, I prefer to take another fight because I don’t want to sit around, I wasn’t born to sit around,” Souza said during the UFC 208 post-fight conference. “So I’ll take another fight if it’s going to take too long to get a title shot.”
That other fight could very well be against the No. 1 middleweight contender Romero, since the champion Michael Bisping is coming off surgery and could be put in a money fight upon return. ‘“Jacare” believes Romero is a good option for him, as he wants to avenge the loss to the Cuban fighter and prove he’s the better competitor.
“Yes, of course that’s an option, that’s a fight I want,” ‘Jacare’ said. “I’ve never lost a rematch, and with Romero, it’s not going to be any different. I’ll prove I didn’t lose to him, I lost to the judges.”
