There’s a lineup of worthy contenders at 155 pounds awaiting Tony Ferguson, but it could be a while before he gets a chance to deal with them.
On Thursday, sources confirmed to MMA Fighting that the 33-year-old UFC interim lightweight champion underwent surgery on his elbow and he will be out of action for an indeterminate amount of time. The news was first announced by Ferguson’s wife Cristina, who posted a picture of the fighter in a cast to her private Instagram account:

Ferguson (23-3) was last seen defeating Kevin Lee by third-round submission at UFC 216 in October. The victory earned him an interim title, which was necessitated by undisputed champion Conor McGregor taking a break from MMA in 2017 to pursue a blockbuster crossover bout with boxing star Floyd Mayweather.
“El Cucuy” has won his last 10 bouts.
