Michal Oleksiejczuk came all the way over from Poland to make his UFC debut. And it turned out the long trip was well worth his time.
The 22-year old weathered an early storm and then cruised to a victory in a light heavyweight matchup at UFC 219 against Khalil Rountree on Saturday night. The judges’ scores at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena were 30-27 across the board for a unanimous decision.
Rountree (6-3) came into the bout with all four of his career finish wins as first-round knockouts, and it was clear he was going for more of the same on Saturday. Rountree mixed up kicks to the torso and legs with big, looping punches. Eventually he started tightening the punches up and landing.
But Oleksiejczuk weathered the storm and appeared, gained his bearings, and turned the tied by the middle of the round as The second round turned into a battle of attrition as both men fought at a methodical pace, but
Rountree attempted to come out swinging in the third, but he tired fast. Oleksiejczuk scored a takedown and spent the rest of the round working Rountree over, first from top control, then side, then in Rountree’s half guard.
Oleksiejczuk improved to 13-2 with his 10th straight win, while Rountree had a two-fight win streak snapped.
