An incredibly violent Fight of the Year candidate went down at UFC 218 on Saturday night ... and this was before Eddie Alvarez and Justin Gaethje hit the Octagon.

Welterweights Yancy Medeiros and Alex Oliveira threw down in an incredible brawl at Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena, engaging in a whirlwind of high-impact moves before Medeiros earned the TKO victory at 2:02 of the final round.

“Hat’s off to Oliveira, he’s a cowboy and all cowboys are tough,” Medeiros said. “But it was a war and I’m here to entertain.”

Medeiros got things things started in the first by knocking down Oliveira. And then it was on. Oliveira dropped Medeiros twice in the round. Somewhere along the way, Medeiros appeared to give Oliveira a broken nose, from which Oliveira shed copious amounts of blood. There was a low blow of a knee thrown by Oliveira for good measure.

Things slowed a bit in the second before picking back up, each competitor landing big shots and seeming to have their opponent on the ropes, only to have the other come firing back like nothing happened. A key moment occurred when Medeiros reversed and tripped Oliveira, then landed huge elbows from the top.

Oliveira scored a takedown early in the third, but Medeiros soon thereafter turned the fight in his favor and didn’t let up until the bout was waved off.

“Dana [White] give us the bonus,” the Hawaiian Medeiros said. “Give us the bonus, it’s time to pay the bills.”

Medeiros (15-4, 1 NC) has won three straight and four of five; Oliveira (18-4-2, 1 NC) had a two-fight win streak snapped.
