Ceremonial weigh-ins with Mike Perry are never dull, and that held true on Friday.
At the ceremonial UFC on FOX 26 weigh-ins in Winnipeg, Perry pulled an unusual move on welterweight opponent Santiago Ponzinibbio, sniffing the Argentinian up and down during the pair’s faceoff.
So what exactly was Perry sniffing around for?
“Little bit of estrogen,” Perry said with a smile on the UFC on FOX 26 weigh-in show on FOX Sports 1.
And what did Perry actually smell?
“I smelled some puppy chow,” he said, smiling again. “I was getting hungry.”
Perry (11-1) and Ponzinibbio (25-3) both successfully made weight earlier in the day at the official UFC on FOX 26 weigh-ins. Perry tipped the scales at a trim 170 pounds, while Ponzinibbio weighed in at 170.5 pounds.
The fight between the two could go a long way in propelling the winner into welterweight title contention.
Perry has emerged as a fan-favorite knockout artist in his short time with the UFC, winning four of his five Octagon appearances by KO/TKO. Ponzinibbio, likewise, has won five consecutive contests highlighted by a trio of first-round knockouts.
Ponzinibbio is currently ranked No. 10 on the UFC’s media-generated welterweight rankings, and Perry has been promising fireworks in the lead-up to UFC on FOX 26. He doubled down on that promise on Friday night.
“I’m a mixed martial artist. I am very well-rounded. I am a complete and total fighter,” Perry said. “I will show that tomorrow.”
