A playful segment on UFC Tonight resulted in some not-so-playful words being exchanged between welterweight contender Colby Covington and FOX Sports host Kenny Florian.
The two became chippy on social media after Florian and UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley were asked to break down Covington’s path to a title shot on Wednesday. Florian suggested that Covington defeat Darren Till and Stephen Thompson before challenging Woodley, while Woodley mentioned both of those fighters as well as Kamaru Usman. He also jokingly added former champions Carlos Newton and Pat Miletich:
How does @ColbyCovMMA (and others) get a path to a title shot? @TWooodley has the answers! https://t.co/k4y5E166zB

Suffice to say, Covington was not amused by the segment, and he took to Twitter to insult both Woodley and Florian. His shot at Florian included a reference to Florian’s resemblance to actor Ben Stiller. Covington added the hashtag “Simple Jack”, which is a mentally handicapped character that Stiller briefly portrayed in a gag as part of the film Tropic Thunder:
We all know #TwoFaceTyrone @TWooodley, we expect lies from him. But @kennyflorian you were 5-2 and got a title shot because when people squinted it looked like Sean Sherk was fighting Ben Stiller. You know better #SimpleJack https://t.co/hsH5iAtzNe

Florian fired back, bringing up Covington’’s recent history of controversial statements and his altercation in Brazil with Fabricio Werdum:
Ah yes, Colby Covington who uses gay slurs, now trying his best to insult referencing people with disabilities. A true class act ladies and gentlemen. Maybe after your lawsuit with Werdum you can find the time for a title shot. Watch out for that boomerang effect. https://t.co/Ofu9KUCT6T

Covington responded in kind by referencing Florian’s January 2016 suspension from the FOX desk for plagiarizing the work of boxing analyst Lee Wylie, and also mocking Florian’s own failed title fight attempts and the competition he faced during the early days of his eight-year pro career:
Oh hi Kenny! I thought you got fired by fox for plagiarizing? Mustve been #fakenews huh? Tell you what, after I beat Tyrone, I give you permission to come out of retirement and lose another title fight. You don't even have to beat Alex Karalexis, Kit Cope and Sam Stout this time. https://t.co/BfXwtdvlQd
