Fabricio Werdum receives assault summons after throwing boomerang at Colby Covington in Australia

Fabricio Werdum is in hot water Down Under.

The UFC heavyweight was charged with common assault Thursday in Australia after throwing a boomerang at fellow fighter Colby Covington in a street altercation. The New South Wales Police Force posted the information about the incident on Facebook without including the names of either party.

Werdum throwing the boomerang, which hit Covington in the neck, per the police, was captured on video by UFC fighter Dan Hooker. Werdum is scheduled to headline UFC Sydney on Saturday against Marcin Tybura.

Covington told MMA Fighting early Thursday morning that he was pursuing charges against Werdum.

Werdum, 40, was issued a Field Court Attendance notice for common assault and is expected to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Dec. 13, per the police. Neither he nor Covington needed medical treatment after the altercation, the post said.

In an interview with UOL, Werdum said Covington said “filthy Brazilians” as the two walked by one another. Werdum said he slapped a phone out of Covington’s hands and Covington kicked him, but Werdum made no mention of throwing the boomerang. Covington said in an Instagram Live video that Werdum punched him and he called Werdum an anti-gay slur at the tail end of their encounter, which was also captured on his video.

Covington denied kicking Werdum and said video evidence will back him up.

“That's a complete lie,” Covington said of Werdum’s explanation. “He wrote a check his ass can't cash. He's on video so all his lies will be told soon.”

The UFC said it would investigate the situation to determine if any Athlete Conduct Policy regulations were broken.

Covington, 29, enraged Brazilians last month at UFC Sao Paulo when, after defeating Demian Maia, he called Brazil a “dump” and called the crowd “filthy animals.” Covington had to be escorted from the arena as he was pelted with garbage.
