Morning Report: Is Nate Diaz in training camp for UFC 219?

For the better part of the last year, the UFC has been fruitlessly trying to book Nate Diaz for a return fight. Now it seems they may be close to doing that, though not the fight anyone had imagined.

On Tuesday, Diaz’s strength and conditioning coach, Jose Garcia, took to Instagram to tease the return of Diaz with a post that showed Nate giving UFC President Dana White the Stockton Slap.

Garcia has since deleted the post but followed it up with another post showing an MMA Mania article referencing his post.

But if this is true, who will Diaz be facing? With Conor McGregor’s impending return to the MMA cage in the offing, a trilogy fight with Diaz had long been considered the front-runner for the next bout for the lightweight champion. But Tony Ferguson’s ascension up the 155 pound ranks has seemingly turned the tide recently and left the younger Diaz brother without a dance partner. Enter UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley.

Ariel Helwani reported yesterday that rumors of a Woodley-Diaz welterweight title fight are not as absurd as they might appear on their face and that some discussions have taken place about making that fight happen.

Woodley himself also added fuel to that fire yesterday when he spoke to FloCombat, telling them he expected his next fight to be announced soon and that it might not be against an established welterweight contender.

"Don't be surprised if you see me in the next couple days announce a fight. It's a sport about risk and reward. It's a sport about becoming a legend. You look at guys that have stepped up on last minute and it changed their lives. I don't think that I should be any different. . .

"At the end of the day, none of the people in my division right now are the fight that are going to get me to legendary status. Get me to the point where I'm a household name. I'm looking for that and I might have found that fight."

Though Woodley never addresses Nate, the younger Diaz fits neatly into Woodley’s hypothetical opponent as a fighter outside of his own weight division with a marquee name. Garcia even essentially confirmed this game of connect-the-dots with yet another Instagram post, this one showing Woodley’s most recent Tweet where he says he’s in training camp, saying, “Hope you pass the drug test and defend that belt.. #andnew.”

A fight with Nate Diaz would be everything Woodley has wanted since the day he won the welterweight title and called out Diaz’s older brother Nick. For the UFC, it would give them a main event for their big end-of-the-year card that currently lacks one despite being less than two months away.
