Recently, Colby Covington has been making a name for himself as both a top welterweight and a top trash talker in the sport. Covington recently called the entire country of Brazil “filthy animals” after winning a unanimous decision over Demian Maia at UFC Sao Paulo last month and has been taking shots at current welterweight champion Tyron Woodley for months, trying to goad him into a fight. But Covington’s latest call out may be his most dangerous one yet: former two time UFC light heavyweight champion, Jon Jones.
Covington lived with Jones for two years in college and speaking recently with Submission Radio, the third-ranked welterweight put Jones on blast for the dichotomy of some of his outside the cage antics and his humble persona.
"I’m saying truths, I’m saying facts. I’m just speaking my mind. I didn’t know I wasn’t allowed to speak my mind in this world. I think I know him more than most people since I lived with him for two years.
“The guy’s a fake - his little f**king baby-faced tweets to Georges St-Pierre, it just got under my skin. He’s just trying to act like a saint, ‘Oh, I’m praying for you.’ Shut up, man. Go do some more coke. Go cheat on your wife some more. You’re a piece of shit dirtbag.”
Jones caught Covington’s ire after tweeting to Georges St-Pierre ahead of his middleweight title fight at UFC 217, causing Covington to respond with a refrain first proffered by UFC President Dana White.
Hey @GeorgesStPierre you've always been one of my biggest inspirations. Show the world how great you can be tonight. Praying for you

Shut up loser! You're the biggest fuck up in the history of sports. #UFC217 https://t.co/gbp3zCdWYh

But if this response seems out of nowhere, it appears Covington’s issues with Jones have been brewing for a long time, since back when they both won JUCO national championships wrestling for Iowa Central Community College in the late 2000’s.
“We were cool the first couple of months we lived together but he was difficult as shit to live with. The guy was dirty, he stunk, he didn’t shower. The guy was just a mess. He was getting into partying and all that bad stuff back then. He was just going down the wrong path but he always tried to act like a saint, ‘Oh, I’m into religion, I’m all about God,’ this and that. He’s just fooling all the fans. He needs to be exposed for the real person that he is because he ain’t this saint and good person like he tries to act like he is.”
Despite being widely considered one of the best MMA fighters in history, Jones has had a tumultuous last couple of years starting with being stripped of his light heavyweight title after his involvement in a hit-and-run accident in 2015 and his suspension for failing a USADA drug test ahead of his planned UFC 200 bout with Daniel Cormier. Jones finally appeared to be getting things back on track after he regained his 205 pound title with a thrilling knockout of Cormier earlier this year at UFC 214, only to then fail another USADA drug test. Jones has since been stripped of the title again, had his win overturned to a No Contest, and is facing a suspension of up to four years for his second failed drug test. And Covington says the none of this comes as a surprise to the guy who lived with him in college.
“Not surprised one bit. Exactly what I expected.”

#YouWillBeUnimmortalized . . .
Hey @IamTheImmortal if you’re still fighting, take some rest and let’s fight end of January or early February. I’ll give you a proper goodbye from the sport. Don’t bring your wife and kids to the fight this time. You’re a smart man. You know what I mean!#YouWillBeUnimmortalized
