Give Colby Covington credit: He knows when he’s crossed a line.
But that doesn’t mean he plans on taking a step back anytime soon.
“Chaos” lived up to his nickname on Saturday, winning a unanimous decision over Brazilian star Demian Maia at UFC Sao Paulo and then punctuating that victory with an invective-filled post-fight promo in which he described the country of Brazil as “a dump” and its fans as “filthy animals”.
UFC senior vice president David Shaw spoke to the media after the event and said that officials are reviewing the matter, which may have prompted Covington to get ahead of the situation.
On Sunday, the 29-year-old welterweight issued a “formal apology” for his actions, though the language and tone were of questionable sincerity:
