UFC Sao Paulo live blog: Demian Maia vs. Colby Covington

This is the UFC Sao Paulo live blog for Demian Maia vs. Colby Covington, a welterweight bout at Saturday night's UFC event at the Ibirapuera Gymnasium in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

In the evening’s co-main event, Maia looks to tie the UFC record for most victories (20) when he takes on Covington, the winner of four straight.

Round 1: Maia comes out and takes the center, landing a left hand to start. Covington reaching on some combinations but mostly coming up short. Maia working a surprisingly effective boxing game. Maia hits a great straight left hand that has Covington backing up and Maia finally shoots but Covington defends. Now Covington is pressing the action but Maia again lands a sharp left hand and a welt is starting to show over Covington’s right eye. Covington’s boxing is a bit wild but he’s been landing some good lead leg kicks that have Maia’s calf showing red. Covington is now bleeding from a cut over his right eye and Maia lands another left for good measure. This is a battle of left straights from Maia and lead calf kicks from Covington. Covington’s pace and pressure is starting to have success as Maia is a little slower of foot and getting backed up more easily. Maia lands a big right hook and straight left as Covington bullies forward. Maia shoots in but Covington sprawls out. A surprisingly fun round ends with both guys winging punches.

Round 2: Maia starts this round with a deep single leg but Covington is able to avoid. Maia is moving and now shoots another double. He’s close to finishing but Covington gets out at the last moment but Maia shoots against. Covington defends the single leg again and Maia stands and shoots again. Maia appears to be tiring and gonna try very hard for takedowns in round two after barely shooting them in the first. Covington’s pace has slowed as well but he’s carrying himself better than Maia who reaches on a combination and misses. Covington returns the favor and reaches and misses. Maia lands an okay left and you can hear Covington’s corner say their fighter is tired. Maia is in on another single leg but Covington just sits on him and gets back up. Another shot and another sprawl but now Maia tries to pull guard. Maia laying on the mat dead tired as the referee tells him to stand. Covington working a jab now and though Maia isn’t getting the takedowns, Covington isn’t doing much anymore either. Good right hand sneaks through for Covington and a winging combination as the rounds ends.

Round 3: Both men need this last round. Scores could be anything honestly. Covington has a little more pep in his step and is crowding and working jabs and shovel punches. Covington reaches soooooo much with his left hand. Brief clinch and Covington lands some good short punches. Maia gets stuffed on his worst takedown of the night. Covington having a very successful round so far. Maia is gassed and Covington is the much fresher fighter. In a tie up both guys start firing punches. Maia fakes a takedown and comes up with a knee that catches Covington. More of the same and Covington charges forward behind a lunging combination. Covington possibly catches Maia who shoots a desperate takedown that Covington sprawls on and Maia pulls guard but Covington stands. Mais i gushing blood from somewhere now and he looks completely spent, falling over on a terrible shot and just laying on the mat. Covington peppers shots from the front headlock position as Maia pours blood on the canvas. Covington stands and celebrates as the final horn sounds. Covington likely takes the win but scores could be all over the place on this one.
