Trainer: Cain Velasquez undergoes successful surgery

According to Cain Velasquez’s trainer, the two-time former UFC heavyweight champion’s back surgery was a success.

Javier Mendez, head coach of San Jose’s famed American Kickboxing Academy, said the Velasquez underwent the procedure Wednesday and is already home from the hospital.

"He had successful surgery on Wednesday,” Mendez told MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani. “It was a minor surgery so he was walking right away. Only thing he has to do is wait until the incision heals before he can start working out. (It'll take) about one month or less for the cut to heal."

Velasquez was scheduled to meet Fabricio Werdum at UFC 207 in a rematch that was expected to determine the next challenger to Stipe Miocic’s heavyweight title. But Velasquez took the unusual step of revealing several weeks before the fight that he already has post-fight surgery scheduled to repair his lingering back issue.

While Velasquez insisted he was okay to fight, the Nevada Athletic Commission ultimately pulled the plug on the fight a week before the card, citing Velasquez’s health.
