UFC on FOX 23 live blog: Valentina Shevchenko vs. Julianna Pena

This is the UFC on FOX 23 live blog for Valentina Shevchenko vs. Julianna Pena, a bantamweight bout at Friday night's UFC event at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colo.

Shevchenko, who has won two of her three UFC fights, will face Pena, who is 4-0 in the UFC, in the main event.

Round 1: They touched gloves. Herb Dean is the ref. Pena quickly to center, and she's in the orthodox stance, waving the off hand. She immediately clinches with Shevchenko, and they go to the fence. Pena with a smothering movement, and she's landing knees to the body on the inside. Shevchenko just trying to turn off the fence, as Pena continues to knee from the clinch. And wow — Shevchenko sweeps her foot on one of those knees, and now she's on top. Pena able to get back up pretty quick, and right back into the fence she presses Shevchenko. More knees. The patterns are being detected early. Shevchenko looking to take Pena down the same way. And again, Shevchenko able to take the aggressive Pena down. Weird that Pena went down twice in the same way. This time Shevchenko is doing some damage, as she hammerfists with the space she created. Pena, from the bottom, boxing Shevchenko's ears. But Shevchenko is keeping her forehead planted into Pena's head, and she's attacking. Shevchenko gladly keeping Pena on her back here. Shevchenko alternately landing, and posturing up enough to vary the strikes. A lot of short stuff, but there's a toll to it all. Pena trying to fish out an armbar at the end. Can't get it. Tough round to score, but will give the nod to Shevchenko. MMA Fighting scores R1 for Shevchenko, 10-9.

Round 2: Pena to the center, and she goes low for a takedown attempt, and now just bodily manhandles Shevchenko to the fence. She's trying to rough her up with muscle. She's in the clinch, and Shevchenko is wailing away at Pena's sides. Pena just dogged in this clinch, kneeing Shevchenko in the body, and trying to work her elbows. Pena looking to toss Shevchenko, and can't make her budge. Now Pena drops lower and looking for a double leg, and she — for a brief second — takes Shevchenko down. But Shevchenko is back up, and we're right back to the toil there. Pena now kicks out Shevchenko's leg, and now she gets a good takedown. Pena in Shevchenko's guard, and she postures up. She's trying to get the G&P going, but so far Shevchenko clinging tight. Shevchenko is climbing the guard, maybe looking for a triangle. Doesn't have anything, as Pena resumes. Pena stands up for a moment, then crawls back into Shevchenko's guard. Armbar attempt here from Shevchenko, and Pena rolling...she taps! Wow! That was amazing, and sudden. Once again, Shevchenko proves to be a most stubborn afterthought on a FOX main event.
