The woman accusing a former UFC fighter of domestic violence can be heard screaming loudly on the phone with the 911 operator before police arrived and made an arrest last month.
Audio of the 911 call in relation to the domestic abuse arrest of Cody East was obtained by MMA Fighting through an open records request with the Bernalillo County (N.M.) Sheriff's Department. On the call (full audio here) from Dec. 18, loud screaming followed by banging can be heard before the phone is hung up.
East’s girlfriend told the operator that she was “hiding in the restroom” while East was outside attempting to break in. The woman said East threatened her with physical violence.
“He said he was gonna break my face,” she said. … “I’m hiding in the restroom. Please. I have my son here.”
The alleged victim pleaded with the 911 operator to not have the police tell East that she was the one who made the call.
“Can you just say that they heard people that were really loud?” she said. “I’m scared that he knows that I called.”
The woman seemed to have put the phone down when East confronted her. She told police, per the arrest report, that East broke into the home and the restroom, where she was hiding.
“He's breaking in,” she said on the call. “Please. Oh my god, he's opening it. I gotta go. Please!”
East, 28, was arrested Dec. 18 by Bernalillo County Sheriff’s deputies on three felony charges: aggravated battery against a household member (great bodily harm), aggravated assault against a household member, and false imprisonment. He has been released on $30,000 bond.
The alleged victim told police that East kneed her in the head, kicked her legs and dragged her by the hair. One of the kicks missed, she said, and opened up a hole in the bathroom wall. She said she willingly went outside with East to his vehicle when East threatened to kill her son. The 10-year-old boy corroborated that to officers, saying when he heard East say that, he ran and hid in his bedroom.
Deputies stopped East’s truck outside the home and noticed the alleged victim in the passenger seat wearing no pants, socks or shoes, with a blanket covering her legs. When officers asked East why she was in a state of undress, East said he didn't realize it and they were just going out for coffee, the arrest report stated.
East said the two had an argument and she locked him out of the house. East said he broke in, because it is his home. He denied any physical altercation. When officers said his girlfriend was injured, East said he did not know that, adding that if “he had punched her,” the deputies would know it.
The Bernalillo County District Attorney is currently deciding whether to pursue the case against East.
In 2008, East was sentenced to three years in prison on child abuse charges. He has had two past arrests for domestic violence, but neither case was pursued. The alleged victim in this case said East had never been physical with her previously.
East, a New Mexico native who has trained at JacksonWink MMA, was released by the UFC in October after an 0-2 run with the promotion. He was signed last year after being discovered on UFC president Dana White’s “Lookin’ for a Fight” web show.
