Apparently no one told Michael Page not to kick a downed opponent.
On Friday, Ronda Rousey got knocked out by UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes in 48 seconds. It was a devastating loss for the former champion and one that may signal the end of her MMA career. And while Rousey actions before the fight certainly didn’t do much to endear her to people, the level schadenfreude enjoyed by many has been extreme.
In the aftermath of UFC 207 there’s been a tremendous amount of internet buzz about the domination. From Justin Bieber’s tweet (that was retweeted 100,000 times) to Cris Cyborg’s Facebook post, there’s been an awful lot of revelry in the demise of Rousey among many fans and fighters alike. Inevitably, the fight became the subject of dozens of internet memes, to the point that even USA Today selected the “funniest 15” of them to post.
Well Page, the rising Bellator welterweight, was too late to make that list but yesterday he submitted a late entry into the contest, joining the Rousey mockery with an Instagram post attempting to create the first dance crazy of 2017, “the Rousey skank.”
The video shows Page jerking intermittenly with his hands in fists and occasionally snapping his head back as if punched in the face. It’s captioned with the hashtags “#TheBestHandsDown” and “#handsdown” clearly decrying the boxing defense of Rousey which has been widely criticized especially after Nunes landed 27 of 47 attempted strikes in their 48 second fight.
Should his dance catch on, this won’t be Page’s first foray into internet stardom. Page gained some brief notoriety when he cracked Evangelista Santos’ skull with a jumping knee and then threw a Pokemon ball at him during his celebration earlier this year. That video has been viewed over 4 million times and helped launch Page as one of the brightest prospects currently outside of the UFC.
As for Rousey, the beating she took at the hands of Nunes is one she’s not likely to forget anytime soon, in part because people seem intent on reminding her.
