Morning Report: Edmond Tarverdyan says there's a chance Ronda Rousey returns for a title shot by the end of the year

New, comments

Edmond Tarverdyan, the trainer of former UFC women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey, says his star pupil may return to the Octagon before the end of the year in a title bout.

One year ago, Ronda Rousey was the biggest star in MMA but that all came crashing down when Holly Holm put her shin on Rousey's chin ending her bantamweight reign. Rousey hasn't fought since then and the big question wasn't when Rousey would return, but if she ever would.

Well now that question may be answered. Rousey's long-time trainer, Edmond Tarverdyan told ESPN this week that Rousey's return to the Octagon is being discussed for later this year in a bantamweight title bout against current champion Amanda Nunes.

"There have been talks about her coming back, but we haven't made a final decision yet. There's a chance she fights to get her belt back this year, but nothing is set yet. If we do make a comeback this year, we will. If not we will make it next year. We want to thank all our fans for being patient."

According to Tarverdyan, Rousey began training for her comeback last month and, given the time frame, it appears most likely that Rousey would be returning for UFC 207 on Dec. 30th if she were to come back this year. That coincides with Fox Sports' report that Rousey has indeed been offered the bout with Nunes though no agreements have been sent nor signed.

For her part, Nunes has been keen on a Rousey fight since she won the bantamweight championship from Miesha Tate at UFC 200. Then yesterday, Nunes posted a message on social media saying she would have "fight news coming soon" which could indicate a fight with the presumptive other top contender Julianna Pena but seems most likely to be about negotiations with Rousey's camp. After all, the return of the UFC's second biggest pay-per-view star would put a nice cap on an already incredibly successful year for Dana White which is perhaps why White recently told Globo, "there's a big chance that Ronda Rousey will fight Amanda Nunes and I'm very confident that Ronda will probably fight before the end of the year."

Whenever it happens, be it this year or next, it appears that Rousey is indeed coming back to the UFC and Tarverdyan had a message for everyone when she does.

"When she does come back, we promise the best Ronda Rousey that anyone has ever seen. "

The return of Ronda Rousey is one of the most interesting stories in MMA today. I hope she does come back because I am fascinated by how she will look and handle the entire thing.

And that is the week folks. Don't forget about Invicta tonight and enjoy the UFC on Saturday. See you back at it again on Monday morning.
