UFC 200 results: Kelvin Gastelum decisions Johny Hendricks in three-round battle

Esther Lin, MMA Fighting

UFC 200's preliminary card featured an important welterweight contest between previous title contender Johny Hendricks and Kelvin Gastelum. While Hendricks may be the fighter of the two who has held the UFC welterweight crown, it'd be the upstart in Gastelum who'd walk away with the win.

Both fighters opened southpaw and it would be Gastelum who'd be first to crack, landing a left and doing the majority of the stalking. Hendricks attempted to pressure, but through the first half of the first round, but could not find a way around the piston-crossing left of Gastelum. Hendricks was able to score with a couple of lefts of his own as backed Gastelum up, but easily lost the first due to the accumulation of damage.

The Oklahoma State University-wrestler was able to make the second round closer with wrestling attempts that slowed Gastelum's momentum while occasionally forcing him on the defensive. Nevertheless, Gastelum was the more active of the two and was largely able to stifle Hendricks's best offensive attacks.

In the third frame, Gastelum kept the intensity early, using multistrike combinations with hands and feet. Gastelum's attack never varied considerably, but would rise and fall. He masterfully kept the appropriate distance, pushing Hendricks on the back foot, forcing the former title contender to blitz forward. Towards the end of the frame, Hendricks was able to push Gastelum to the fence and even scored a takedown briefly, but Gastelum immediately popped to his feet. By the end of the round, it was Gastelum trying to place Hendricks's back against the fence. As the round expired, the two exchanged punches to close the fight, but fight was essentially already won.

In the end, the judges scored the bout 29-28, 30-27, 30-27, handing Gastelum a unanimous decision victory. The winner's record jumps to 12-2, while Hendricks falls to 17-5.
