Donald Cerrone apologizes for ‘offensive’ homophobic slur

Donald Cerrone has issued an apology on social media for a homophobic slur he uttered Sunday.

At a Q&A during the UFC Fan Expo in Las Vegas, "Cowboy" said Daniel Cormier fought "like a f*g" against Anderson Silva at UFC 200 on Saturday night. It was a reference to Cormier's conservative, wrestling-heavy strategy.

"Earlier today, I said something that was offensive & I'm truly sorry," Cerrone wrote on Instagram. "I've got so many friends and fans in the LGBTQ community who I let down today. I can and will be better because I respect the community and equality matters!"

In the Instagram picture, Cerrone is wearing the "We Are All Fighters" t-shirt the UFC made in conjunction with the LGBTQ Center of Las Vegas to promote gay and lesbian equality. All the sales from the shirts go to the community center.

Cerrone's slur came at an awkward time for the UFC since the shirts just launched this past week and Amanda Nunes became the first openly gay UFC champion Saturday night at UFC 200 after beating Miesha Tate.

"Cowboy" took umbrage with Cormier's style of fighting against Silva in the Q&A with CM Punk and UFC broadcaster John Gooden. Cormier won the late-notice bout by unanimous decision (30-26, 30-26, 30-26).

"How you gonna give up weight and then fight like a f*g, man?" Cerrone said.
