A battle between top-ranked UFC strawweight contenders Rose Namajunas and Karolina Kowalkiewicz is the latest addition to the fight card of UFC 201. The UFC confirmed the match-up on Monday following an initial report by ESPN.
Namajunas (5-2) enters the bout on the brink of title contention, riding a three-fight win streak highlighted by dominant finishes over Paige VanZant and Invicta champion Angela Hill.
The talented 23-year-old also holds a trio exhibition victories over the likes of Joanne Calderwood and Randa Markos from her time on The Ultimate Fighter 20. Namajunas most recently captured a close unanimous decision over Tecia Torres at UFC on FOX 19, and is currently the third-ranked strawweight on the UFC's media-generated rankings.
She'll now take on Kowalkiewicz (9-0), a 30-year-old Polish prospect who has quickly established herself as a name to watch in the division with back-to-back victories over Markos and Heather Jo Clark under the UFC banner.
Prior to fighting in the UFC, Kowalkiewicz picked up a win in Invicta FC over highly-regarded Japanese strawweight Mizuki Inoue and also reigned as KSW's strawweight champion. She is currently the No. 6 ranked strawweight in the UFC.
UFC 201 takes place July 30 at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Ga. The event is headlined by two title fights, as welterweight champion Robbie Lawler looks to defend his belt against Tyron Woodley, and flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson takes on Wilson Reis.
