UFC Fight Night 88, headlined by Garbrandt vs. Almeida, draws 757,000 viewers

Between putting lesser-known names in the main event, and the holiday weekend, UFC's Sunday night Fight Night headlined by Cody Garbrandt's first round finish of Thomas Almeida was the lowest rated of the company's four prime time Fight Nights this year

The show did 757,000 viewers on average for the main card that aired from 9 p.m. to 12:18 a.m. The show peaked at 897,000 viewers for the decision win by Jeremy Stephens over Renan Barao in Barao's debut as a featherweight.

Not including the aberration of the Dominick Cruz title win over T.J. Dillashaw in January, which makes taking a traditional average misleading, the company's other three prime time Fight Nights this year have averaged 1,150,000 viewers, significantly up from 2015 numbers.

The 757,000 number is down slightly lower than the 2015 prime time average. A show on a Saturday night from the same weekend last year did 813,000 viewers with a main event of Carlos Condit vs. Thiago Alves, both significantly better-known fighters.

The UFC event was the third most-watched sports event on television on Sunday night, trailing a Los Angeles Dodgers vs. New York Mets game on ESPN that did 1,660,000 viewers, and a soccer game on Univision Deportes between Pachuca vs. Monterrey that did 1,093,000 viewers.

As is usual for a UFC broadcast, the largest audience were Males between the ages of 35 and 49. In the 18-49 demographic, the audience was 68.3 percent males.

The prelims, airing from 7-9 p.m., averaged 469,000 viewers, down significantly from the 896,000 average for the last three prime time prelims. The first hour of the prelims were the most-watched sporting event on cable at the time, and the second hour was second to the baseball game.

The post-fight show did 364,000 viewers. The pre-fight show did 186,000 viewers.
