It's become a sadly familiar sight: former Strikeforce welterweight champion Nate Marquardt on the wrong end of a knockout loss.
Thiago Santos became the latest to finish the Colorado veteran on Saturday night, dropping Marquardt at 3:39 of the opening round in their UFC 198 middleweight bout in Curitiba, Brazil.
The loss was the sixth in Marquardt's last eight fights and fourth in that stretch via knockout or TKO.
The finish seemed predestined as Santos pushed forward from the outset. A couple minutes in, he dropped Marquardt with a left hand. He got up from that, but Santos continued to pile on the pressure. He landed a body kick which initiated his finishing flurry, leading referee Kevin MacDonald to wave off the bout.
Santos (12-3) won his fourth straight fight with his seventh career KO. Marquardt dropped to 34-16-2.
