UFC 198 live blog: Warlley Alves vs. Bryan Barberena

This is the UFC 198 live blog for Warlley Alves vs. Bryan Barberena, a welterweight bout at Saturday night's UFC event at the Arena da Baixada in Curitiba, Brazil.

Alves, who is 10-0 in his career, will face Barberena, who is 2-1 in the UFC and 11-3 overall, on the main card.

Round 1: Pretty crazy main card in Curitiba, and Alves versus Barberena (a.k.a. the man who derailed Sage Northcutt) gets us kicked off. Third man for this one is Leon Roberts. They touch them up. Alves with a huge body kick, and now he goes on the attach. He is already got a guillotine sunk, and it's tight...looks like Barberena is fending it off. Alves still clinging to it, and now Barberena pops out. Now Barberena is on top and driving Alves into the fence on the floor, trying to posture out and land. Alves scoots to a knee, and he's up, still with his back on fence. A couple of inside knees from the clinch, as Barberena keeping the pressure on. They peel away from one another, and Barberena gets socked with a big right. Alves swinging some major leather in space. Now he moves in and lands a great combo, ending with an uppercut that hits flush. Elbows from the clinch from Barberena, but that doesn't faze Alves. Another clinch, and Alves tucks a sweet little uppercut through the fending limbs. Alves is the aggressor now. He moves in again and lands, before rolling off. Nice leg kick from Barberena, but now a barrage of body shots from Alves, hands and feet to the ribcage. They clinch, and Alves stalks Barberena around the links. Barberena tries to blast Alves with an elbow off the break, but comes up blank. Barberena times out a nice knee as Alves changes levels, but it didn't seem to bother the Brazilian. Clinch again, Alves pushing. Nothing doing there, so he rolls back. Body kick from Barberena lands, and he lets a left fly from range. A little Muay Thai at the end, a knee from plum lands. Round 2: They touch again. Alves attacks Barberena's body with a kick, and now Barberena comes back at him up top with a combo — doesn't connect flush. Alves doing a good job working the body with his kicks. Now he leans in and blasts Barberena again on the fence with a body kick. Some blood now on Alves' left eye. Another body kick from the Brazilian. Barberena now moving forward, but he's huffing air. They exchange, and Barberena might have gotten the better shot in. Alves doing a nice job changing levels a bit, subtly, and he lands an uppercut — now a stiff left jab. The jabs are stating to come out in volume. Barberena now in the clinch, and he gets in a couple of short shots there on the fence. They break. Barberena slowly beginning to accumulate shots on Alves' legs. They clinch again, and Alves leans his whole body in, and eats an elbow. Barberena still pushing action when he can. He lands a low kick, and then comes up high, catches forearms. There's a nice combo from Barberena! He lands big twice in a row. Now Alves spins out of there, and as they come together again Barberena — aggressive as hell, if a little slower — finding his rhythm. He lands a nice series of punches there. Tough round, could go either way. Could be tied up. MMA Fighting scores R2 for Alves, 10-9 (20-18 overall).

Round 3: Alves comes out quick, and yet he takes a left hand. Alves waves a high kick by Barberena, misses. Straight left hand lands for Alves, and now Barberena slips and Alves pounces on him. They are on fence, as Barberena regains his feet/balance. They switch positions, as Barberena now spins Alves to the ground. He's right back up, and they move to the center. Another body kick from Alves; those have been there all night. Solid combo from Barberena, and the uppercut slams home clean. Flying knee from Alves on the fence; it lands, and then Barberena answers with a hard elbow from up close. They roll on the fence, in the clinch. Straight right lands for Barberena, and now he plows ahead with a mightier right. He's bringing it. Not sure people thought he'd compete as hard. Alves eating a ton of shots here. Both dudes are tired. They are having trouble finding the strength to throw anything with mustard, and ever harder time getting clear of incoming stuff. Barberena still stalking ahead, and landing. Alves has a chin. Stiff left jabs from Alves as Barberena continues to move in. Big spinning wheel kick narrowly misses from Alves after ridiculous exchange. Barberena just throwing now, trying to go out on his shield. They are still throwing manically as the horn ends the fight. Crazy fight. Could really go either way.
