Valerie Letourneau vs. Joanne Calderwood flyweight bout added to UFC Fight Night 89

Esther Lin, MMA Fighting

The first women’s flyweight bout in the history of the UFC is set for June 18, as one-time strawweight title contender Valerie Letourneau meets Joanne Calderwood at Ottawa’s UFC Fight Night 89.

The UFC calls the bout a "special flyweight attraction", not "the launch of a new division". However, the promotion revealed they are "looking into possibly opening a women’s flyweight division in the future."

Letourneau (8-4) competed as a flyweight and bantamweight before joining the UFC in 2015. The Canadian fighter won back-to-back fights with Jessica Rakoczy and Maryna Moroz to earn a shot at the UFC title against Joanna Jedrzejczyk, losing via unanimous decision.

Calderwood (10-1) fought the majority of her MMA fights at 115 pounds, and entered the UFC after competing at TUF 20. The Scottish fighter holds 2-1 Octagon record with decision wins over Seo Hee Ham and Cortney Casey.

UFC Fight Night 89 takes place at the TD Place Arena in Ottawa, Canada, and features a welterweight clash between Rory MacDonald and Stephen Thompson in the main event.
