A welterweight showdown with explosive potential is currently under discussion.
MMAFighting.com's Ariel Helwani reported on Wednesday edition of UFC Tonight that talks are under way for a matchup between Rory MacDonald and Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson.
The 33-year-old Thompson (12-1) is coming off the most impressive performance of his career, a one-sided, first-round TKO finish of former UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks in Las Vegas on Feb. 6.
The South Carolina native has won six in a row, with four of his last five coming by KO or TKO.
MacDonald (18-3), for his part, would make his first Octagon appearance since he was half of one of the greatest fights in mixed martial arts history. MacDonald's fifth-round TKO loss to current welterweight champion Robbie Lawler at UFC 189 was the runaway pick for 2015 Fight of the Year.
The fighter out of Montreal's Tristar gym has won eight of his past 10 fights, with both losses coming to Lawler.
No date has been set for the potential clash of 170-pound contenders.
