Weigh-in day turned out to be the highlight of Kevin Nicholson's UFC debut weekend.
Nicholson proposed to his girlfriend right before he weighed in for his UFC Fight Night 82 light heavyweight bout against Misha Cirkunov, and she said yes.
But the fairy tale came to an abrupt end on Saturday, as Cirkunov battered Nicholson before finally getting the submission victory at 1:28 of round two in Las Vegas.
Cirkunov set the tone in the opening round with a vicious knee, a takedown, and several more knees and various strikes. Nicholson showed great toughness in simply surviving the onslaught, but it was clear by the end of the round that it was only a matter of time.
When Cirkunov sunk in a rear-naked choke, you could hear Nicholson's jaw crack, so needless to say, the end came quick.
"Everything went the way I planned," said Cirkunov. "I didn't want to push too much because everyone expects me to push hard. I just enjoyed being here. First I softened him up a little bit to let him get a little engaged, then I got the rear naked choke."
Cirkunov (11-2) has won six straight fights and is 2-0 in the UFC with two submission victories. Nicholson (6-2) had a five-fight win streak snapped.
