If for some reason the highly anticipated light heavyweight title rematch between champion Daniel Cormier and former titleholder Jon Jones and the flyweight title fight between Demetrious Johnson and unbeaten challenger Henry Cejudo aren't enough to get your attention, UFC 197 has added a killer lightweight showdown to the lineup.
Former UFC and WEC kingpin Anthony Pettis will take on the always entertaining Edson Barboza on April 23 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The bout was initially reported Wednesday on UFC Tonight.
The 29-year old Pettis (18-4) seemed on the cusp of superstardom when he won the lightweight title in 2013. But he lost the championship to Rafael dos Anjos last year and then dropped a split decision to Eddie Alvarez in January in Boston.
Barboza (16-4), for his part, has racked up some impressive victories in his UFC career, but has never quite broken through to legit title contention. He's dropped two of his past three fights, the last of which was a submission loss to Tony Ferguson in a highly competitive bout on Dec. 11 in Las Vegas.
